The Moose In His Hair

11 May

Scene: It is a rainy morning, typical for spring in Seattle.  Two adults, coffee in hand, and a small child are putting on their coats getting ready to leave for the day.  The child pauses at the front door, clearly reluctant to step outside.

J: Mom?!
M:  Yes James.
J:  Will the rain ruin the hippo?
J:  (helpfully repeating) The hippo.
M:  Babe, I don’t know what you mean.
J:  (exasperated) But Mom! Will the rain hurt the hippo?
M:  (totally mystified) What hippo?  There are NO hippos…well…er…no hippos here….at our house….now…..but there hippos out in the wild…Africa…very dangerous.  What are you talking about?
J:  (pointing to his carefully coiffed bangs and slowing down) Will the rain hurt hippo On My Head?
M: blank stare……..blink……dawning realization………OH!  (trying hard not to laugh) No son, the rain won’t ruin the MOUSSE in your hair.

Unless, of course, it’s raining cats and dogs…
