Mama's Losin' It

Today is a two-fer.  Thanks Mama Kat, for the prompts this week.  I chose…

5.) Who blind-sided you? Write about a time someone caught you totally off guard.  (writingfix.com)

I used to work on the 18th floor of an office building in downtown Seattle. I was a worker bee, my days were filled with endless phone calls and reports.  This particular Friday was shaping up to be like all the others, until I walked past my boss’s cube.

He popped his head up and said, “at the end of the day, we’ll need to go down to HR and have a little chat.”  In corporate speak, that means you’re fired.  I nodded, and stumbled to my cube in a fog.  I couldn’t fathom what I’d done so terribly wrong.  I could take 100 calls a day and be helpful.  Did I forget to file a report…WHAT?

The day couldn’t have oozed along any slower.  As 3pm rolled around my heart started to hammer.  Was I supposed to go see my boss, was he coming to me? Is there an etiquette  for getting fired?  I could hear footsteps coming down the aisle and a growing murmur.  I was mortified, was there going to be an audience?

I looked up, and there was Tim and he was holding roses.   My boss was behind Tim, hopping up and down, clapping, and grinning like the Cheshire Cat.  Tim didn’t say a word, he just nodded, and pushed the roses towards me.  You probably know what was coming, but at the time, all I could think was, “does this mean I’m not fired?”

The roses had a note tied to them that said “Will you?”  Inside, there was a ring, and a note that said, “Marry me? XOXOXO Tim”  Of course I said yes, and all of my co-workers cheered as Tim escorted me downstairs to a waiting limousine.  As I passed my boss he said, “this means you get to go home early!”   True story.

Great story! And you told it very well, because I was feeling nauseous right along with you during that loooonnnnngggg day at work. (I’m assuming you married Tim, right?)

Dusty- I tried to visit your blog and comment, but had technical issues. Thanks for dropping by!

Thanks for dropping by and commenting. Yes I did marry Tim, we’ve been together for 15 years.

I love that the discussion was in your head, but that the realization unfolded slowly.

My MIL is the exact opposite of yours. We had to stop taking our son to visit her because the mess was horrendous. I would have loved to tell her what I was thinking but I just couldn’t do it. I was eloquent though, Churchill would have been proud.

    I love your blog!

That is such a great story! I wouldn’t have been able to hold it together all day like you did. I would’ve beat my boss down with incessant nagging until he spilled the beans. lol
Great article! Found you on Mama Kat’s. I hope you’ll stop by and read my article when you get a chance. Have a great day!

I am completely jealous in a can-I-introduce-your-blog-to-my-boyfriend kind of way. That is a super amazing story! I always hate those ambiguous “we need to talk” comments that bosses make. Even when we know we have been diligent little worker bees we still wonder if we’ve done something wrong. I used to have a boss that would IM me all the time to have me go to her desk to chat. I remember every time I wanted to ask why. I could have been paranoid; or it could have been that I hadn’t quite grown into the work ethic I have now and actually WAS messing around! 😉

That sounds like something that could be written in a romance novel. I would have been nervous all day. I would have faltered under the pressure and just asked for them to be done with it so I could go job hunting the rest of the day. Then again, I’m real big on blowing surprises.

That is a great story, except for the day of terrible stress that proceeded it.

I thought the pictures in your previous post looked like Seattle. My oldest thinks Seattle is the best city in the world and would happily move there in a second. This mostly has to do with the gift shop at the Flight Museum.
