Rants from Mommyland recently blogged about the funniest song lyrics their kids got wrong. They had invited other moms to share some of the delightfully twisted lyrics that their kids had come up with. Sadly, at the time, I had nothing to submit. When James has belted out a tune, the lyrics have been totally made up, usually dealing with the ins and outs of his day, mostly a litany of offenses against his person, and almost always he sings alone.

But over the weekend, at our friend’s dining room table, James sang his version of Farmer in the Dell. It went a little something like this…..

“The Farmer in the Dell, the Farmer in the Dell, High Ho the Stereo the Farmer in the Dell!”

He sang it quietly, his eyes brimming with hesitant concern. Singing to an audience was scary and he wanted nothing more than our whole-hearted approval. He repeated this line several times because he couldn’t remember the rest and when he was done, we gave him a wild round of applause.

Growing up in Eastern Washington meant that I didn’t see a whole lot of snow. Building a snowman out of what equated to a thin coating of frozen reindeer spit, just didn’t work. Seeing a snowman of this grand stature in my very own yard had me giggling and clapping my hands with glee and I wasn’t alone.

Sweetness and Light

I have no clue how to start this one, the thread linking what follows is tenuous. I have no excuse other than I’ve been watching Wizards of Waverly Place with James and I think my IQ has dropped a few points. OK, here it goes.

James was full of thoughts and opinions tonight. Some were sweet, others light, but light in the way that vinegar lightens up oil in salad dressing.

The Sweetness:

Sam’s folks had agreed to babysit for us tomorrow night. Our plans unraveled when James came down with a nasty cold that quickly turned into a sinus infection. When I told James that we were going to have to get an emergency backup babysitter, rather than seeing Sam, he dropped his chin to his chest, and quietly wept. Through the tears, he told me that he didn’t want a babysitter he only wanted Sam.

The Light:

A few minutes later, he perked up and told me it would be OK as long as the babysitter was nice, and wasn’t pushy….wait for it….like me. Thankfully, in his opion, even though I’m pushy all the time, he still likes me.

Awwww, I feel so relieved.

Puppy

James had a huge weekend: two sleep overs, a grandpa Pat visit, and a trip to the kid symphony. Naturally, when Sunday evening rolled around, rather than being tired but satisfied and grateful, he was a mess. His tummy hurt, he was feverish, and agitated.

J: Mom! I feel so sick, my tummy hurts.
M: I’m sorry, going to bed is the best thing then.
J: No! Mom my tummy hurts!
M: Are you gonna barf?
J: I feel like I might, but I won’t.
M: Ok?! You don’t have a fever, I think you are going to be OK. The best thing to do is to settle down then.
J: bursts into tears, starts writhing in pain. Momma, do you know what would help settle me down….sooobbbb?
M: Going to sleep?
J: No! more writhing and sobbing…..
M: What then? thinking Ibuprofen, tummy medicine….
J: A dog.

Sigh….

Random Tuesday

Hi- it has been a while, I know. With the Kindergarten still kicking our butts, my birthday and the Holidays fully under way you’d think that I’d have plenty of fodder to feed into the blog mill, but nope, nopity, nope.

Normally I am super jazzed about the fall, but this year the crisp air, the colors, none of it has moved me maybe because I’m seeing it all through a thick wall of endless rain. My birthday came and went, I turned fou…something, something which didn’t exactly put me in the best of moods. Tim did give me a lovely Kindle Fire which I lurvs very much. I love it and pet it and have named it George. Ahem…

Thanksgiving was lovely. My sister-in-law hosted, so I didn’t have to do much cooking, nor did I have to cope with a household full of people for which I’m appropriately thankful for. James had a wonderful time playing with his cousins. Getting him to take a break from playing long enough to eat was no easy task. We saw very little of James during the evening which was odd and liberating. Again thankful.

We survived our first round of parent-teacher conferences. James did very well; in most areas he rated strength or developing and didn’t have any areas for concern. He needs to work on recognizing letters and numbers no surprise there, and needs to be willing to try to do more “things” on his own.

We are dog sitting and she is a very good girl. Her name is Raja and she is probably the best dog on the planet. We love her and pet her and call her Raj. She only barks when a strange human, or strange cat comes to the door. Well, the cats are ours and aren’t technically strangers, but they are strangers to her. She sits when told, lays down when told, doesn’t jump up or beg, or runaway when we let her out, she hasn’t gotten into anything, and doesn’t jump up. She didn’t even root around in her bag of dog food when we forgot and left it with her in her pen.

She has a few quirks, but even those are cas cute as her soft nose. She will carefully pick up two pieces of kibble, not one, not three, two, will carry them to her blanket and then methodically ”buries” them with her nose. She also has to lay down in every puddle she can find, and afterwards likes to be washed off with the hose….outside in the freezing cold. At first, I thought for sure that she was just being polite and not biting my face off. But, at the end of our second walk, she ran right up to the hose and laid down, thumped her tail expectantly until I washed her off. The dog farst are pretty darn nasty though. Can’t say I will miss that.

Our friends Scott and April host a fantastic party every year that includes a costume contest. We won in the best family costume category even though James was not down with the whole Charlie Brown idea. We tried to pass him off as Linus dressed as a clone trooper, but no one believed our pack of lies.

We all had a great time visiting with friends, seeing everyone else’s creative ideas. James was exhausted afterwards; he fell asleep clutching his glow sticks.

2011 was our first official Halloween that included trick-or-treating. James has never been a huge fan of candy but he had fun in the dark, ringing doorbells, and was very polite.

Nick Nack

Saturday, while running errands, James sang himself. He sang to a rhythm that he kept by clapping and patting his knees.

“Nick nack, paddy whack, give me a dog, I will feed him every day!’

Do you think he wants something? I think so, but I’m really not sure what it could possibly be…

Toothless

James is less one tooth! Being that he is a Davis-Hart amalgamation it didn’t happen easily either. Slamming of doors and string were not part of the picture.

All that was needed the help of Novocaine, a pair of pliers and a really awesome dentist. James pulled through just fine, no pun intended.

James was initially excited by the prospect of the tooth fairy visiting, but right before bed he became anxious with the concept.

M: James the Tooth Fairy is going to come tonight!
J: Silence……huge worried eyes ala Puss-n-Boots from Shrek.
M: But James, she’s going to bring you money for your tooth!
J:………more huge eyes
M: Baby are you scared?
J: wordless nodding….
M: What is scaring you?
J: The bumpity bump, bump, bump…
M: I’m confused, what is the bumpity, bump, bump, bump?
J: The sound of my teeth rattling around in the walls when she flies away.
M: Oh no sweety she won’t make any noise, you won’t even know she’s been here.
J: Really, she won’t buzz?
M: Maybe, but no one has ever heard her, everyone usually sleeps right through her visits.
J: Doesn’t she carry a wand or someth’n? clearly still not convinced
M: Maybe, but no one has ever seen her, so I don’t know for sure. But honey, she gives you money in trade for your teeth. I promise you she’s really nice, not scary in the least. If she wasn’t nice she’d just take your tooth and say “I’v got your tooth and no money for you. Sorry Charlie, ha ha!”
J: tiniest of smiles. Yeah, if she was mean, she’d probably say “to bad so sad.” How does she get under my pillow?
M: Well she’s magical so poof she just makes a tunnel and crawls in.
J: But how does she breathe?
M: She’s magical honey, she can breathe just fine anywhere.
J: I didn’t believe in her until just now.

This morning James proudly displayed his loot, and assured me that he did indeed hear buzzing last night.

The going rate for a tooth in our house is $1.11. What is the going rate in your house?

Snarf! Nooooooo! Gack! It’s dark, it can’t possibly be morning, it hasta be in da middle of da nigh….zzzzzz..

What! Wake up?! No I can’t possibly, wake up, my eyes……..zzzzzzz……

Alright! Mom! Gah! Must stretch, oohh lanquid rolling over on to my tummy would feel grea…..zzzzzzz

Mom! What!?! I’m so tired can’t Mamma jus leave me alone? My feet are cold but Dad’s back is so very warm…..Here let me jus put dem right here….aahhhhhzzzzzz

OK! OK! Crazy Mamma always so pushy. Maybe if I tell her that she’s hurting my feelings and cry, she will let me stay in da warm bed. Nope did not work. I’ll pretend to be spaghetti instead and slide outta da bed, she’ll forget I’m here and that I havta get dressed.

Oh gah! The pain, the light, is burning searing holes in my eyes! Maybe if I fall into a heap on the floor and pretend to be dying she’ll give me a hug and forget that I need to brush teeth and get shirt an pants and unnerpants an socks on……sob, sob, sniffle…….zzzzzz.

Blink! Oh man she’s really mad now, better get dressed for reals. This is me hurrying up, high gear, yeah for me!

Wow!!! Holy cow! What what is dat in ma bellybutton? Kinda hurts when I poke it…ooohh giggle, that tickles too. Oh that thing is an old goldfish cracker crumb, maybe Mamma will wanna sniff it. Oh yeah unnerpants.

Biting my tongue helps me snap my pants. Snaps are stupid, I hate them. But hate and stupid are baaaaad words. Shhhhh…..

Mamma what is that thing that we saw at the place yesterday? You know the thing with the shape? Sock one! Sock two! Now pants! Mom! I AM getting dressed, but what is that thing about the stuff at the place?!?! I know, I know, less talking more dressing, but that hurts my feelings….. Sob!

Darn shirt, my head won’t fit through the hole in the top and I’m NOT HAPPY! Sob! Hugs are not making this better woman! Hands off! SOOOOOOBBBBBB!
